Rust Lawn Disease
Damage caused – During the early stages light-yellow spots are seen on the grass leaves followed by yellow, reddish-brown or black pustules (lumpy powdery substance). With no distinct borders, patches of turf will be affected.
Grass species affected – Most grass species are susceptible to attack by rust although the occurrence of this disease is quite rare. Factors promoting infection – low fertility, drought conditions, prolonged periods of dew formation and shade can all encourage symptoms of rust.
Prevention and treatment – Relieve the conditions leading to drought and low fertility. Reduce levels of shade the sward is exposed to and remove morning dew from the surface at earliest convenience.
